Avoiding A Tragedy: A Workplace Violence Prevention Workshop

Sadly, violent incidents are not uncommon in our workplaces. Creating a violence-free workplace is every organization’s goal, but how do employers foster a safe environment? How can you recognize the warning signs and take the appropriate action to protect your employees (and yourself)? Join the workplace violence authority Gary McGuire as he shares his insights for identifying the early warning signs and understanding the symptoms and behaviors of individuals escalating toward violent behavior. Gary will also address important steps organizations can take to prevent (or minimize the impact of) incidents of violence.



Shayna Balch – Partner with Fisher & Phillips

Shayna Balch is a partner in both the Phoenix and Los Angeles offices. She represents employers in employment and labor litigation matters before federal and state courts as well as before administrative agencies. She handles matters across all facets of labor and employment law including employment discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, restrictive covenants, preventive counseling, employee training, personnel policies, and employment agreements. Shayna has represented clients before trial and appellate courts, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Arizona Civil Rights Division, and United States Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel (OSC).  In 2012, Shayna was named one of five women under the age of 35 in AZ Business Magazine's ranking of the 50 Most Influential Women in Arizona. She has been selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers Southwest – Rising Stars since 2012. Shayna was also included in “40 under 40” for 2013 by the Phoenix Business Journal.  The award honors the top 40 business people in Phoenix under the age of 40.  Shayna is also a weekly guest blogger for the Phoenix Business Journal where she provides advice on a variety of labor and employment topics.

L. Eric Dowell – Shareholder with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.

Mr. Dowell represents employers in both the private and public sector in the areas of labor and employment litigation and counseling.  He assists employers on a wide variety of employment law matters involving employment discrimination, accommodating disabilities and family leave, sexual harassment, executive employment agreements, wrongful termination, employee training, investigation and discipline issues, workplace torts, personnel policies and manuals, corporate downsizing, trade secret/anti-piracy, non-compete agreements and unfair competition litigation and arbitration.  He also handles matters with the EEOC, ACRD and OSHA.  Mr. Dowell also counsels employers on how to stay compliant with federal and state laws and avoid wrongful termination, harassment and discrimination lawsuits. Finally, Mr. Dowell represents public and private college and university clients ranging from large, proprietary universities and technical institutes to public and private brick and mortar institutions in discrimination and retaliation claims by faculty and students and matters related to satisfactory academic progress, breach of contract, False Claims Act and consumer fraud, student drug testing, and student grievances. Mr. Dowell has written multiple articles on employment and business law and frequently speaks and trains on these topics as well.

Allison B. Bans – Associate with Snell & Wilmer LLC

Allison Bans practices employee benefits law with a focus on health and welfare plans. Allison has drafted and reviewed various employee benefits documents, including Summary Plan Descriptions, Summaries of Benefits and Coverage and other open enrollment materials. She has assisted clients with Internal Revenue Service filings and Department of Labor investigations of health and welfare plans; drafted and prepared comment letters on new regulatory guidance; drafted proposed legislation; advised clients on potential health and welfare funding vehicles, such as VEBAs and 401(h) accounts; advised clients on transitioning from employer-sponsored health care coverage to a private exchange model; analyzed state same-sex marriage and domestic partner laws and how these laws affect employee benefits; and counseled clients on IRC Section 105(h) nondiscrimination rules.
