Come join the SHRMGP President, SHRMGP Past President, AZSHRM incoming Director, Director for Talent Management at Arizona State University Enterprise Partners, members of the SHRMGP Board of Directors, SHRMGP Mentorship Program Chair, SHRMGP volunteers, and SHRMGP Members for an evening of food, networking and Q/A. Audience member will have the opportunity to ask the panelists questions. Pre-determined questions were created by the current SHRMGP Mentees and Mentors around three SHRM competencies:

 

Consultation - The ability to provide guidance to organizational stakeholders.  

Critical Evaluation - The ability to interpret information to make business decisions and recommendations.  

 

Business Acumen - The ability to understand and apply information to contribute to the organization’s strategic plan. 

 

Meet our SHRMGP Summer Mentorship Program Panelists and Panel Moderator!

 

Janice Mrkonjic is a Director of Corporate Partnerships with Maricopa Corporate College (MCOR) which was established by the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) to deliver high-impact training and development solutions for business, industry associations, and government. She is passionate about elevating workforce and economic development initiatives through education and professional development programs synchronized with recruiting, retaining, and retraining strategies led by HR professionals for business success.

 

Drawing on leadership roles from her diverse career background with business, academia, and nonprofits, she helps others succeed as they embrace challenges, develop their strengths, and build resilience to achieve their potential.

 

Her credentials include a M.Ed. in adult education and eLearning coupled with a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. In addition to her 2019-2021 term on the SHRMGP Board as Chair of our Community Partnerships Committee, in 2019 Janice was appointed to the Higher Education seat on the City of Phoenix Business and Workforce Development (PBWD) Board and will continue to serve on their Business Engagement Committee.

 

Fun facts: Janice hails from Nova Scotia. She loves boosting our economy so you just might bump into her at a mall near you or in the crowd enjoying local cultural festivities.

 

Phebe Jones, MBA, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, PHR-CA, CHPE. Ms. Jones has been in Human Resources leadership for over 20 years, with the last 15 years in the healthcare space. Additionally, she has lead Corporate Compliance and HIPAA Compliance at several organizations. Currently, Ms. Jones is a HR Leader at Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX), a global leader in healthcare information technology solutions that advance clinical, financial and operational results. Previously, she led the HR function for a large Health Center in San Diego and prior to that at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

 

Jones has been on the SHRMGP Board for 2 years and serves as 2019 SHRM-GP President. She had previously served on the Board for San Diego SHRM. Additionally, she devotes time and support to other non-profits such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and San Diego Greyhound Adoption Center.

 

Jones holds an MBA with an HR emphasis. She earned SHRM-SCP certification in 2015, SPHR in 1997 and PHR-CA in 2011. In 2012, she became a Certified HIPAA Privacy Expert.

 

In 2016, Ms. Jones moved to the Phoenix area with her husband and dogs; and loves Phoenix. Her husband enjoys a leisurely retirement, and she enjoys music, dancing, travel and adventure. Fun fact: Phebe has been to more than 150 concerts in her life; from Manhattan Transfer to the Rolling Stones. She especially enjoys 70’s, 80’s and 90’s rock/alternative rock. You may even find her singing karaoke from time to time.

 

Why does HR matter? Phebe’s mantra has been Creating Workplaces Where People Win and Organizations Thrive! This has been a driving force for her throughout her career. The effectiveness of both the organization and their people, working together, creates success for each. The organization and human capital must have a strong interdependent relationship for both to succeed, and HR is positioned to have the greatest impact.

 

Lorie A. Birk, Esq, SPHR, SHRM-SCP is an employment lawyer that has served as in-house counsel and external advisor to a variety of companies crossing multiple industries and multiple locations.  In addition, she has led human resources departments.  She began her career in Silicon Valley, California and moved to Arizona in 2006.  In March 2017 she established her own HR and employment law consulting firm, HR Law Works, LLC.  In December 2017 she became the Sr. Director of Human Resources at Terros Health.

 

During her career, Lorie has provided counsel as part of the executive management team.  She has dealt with many facets of HR and employment law including internal investigations, Department of Labor investigations, civil rights charges, mergers and acquisitions, compensation plans, wage and hour issues, leaves of absence, and hiring and termination processes.

 

Lorie obtained a B.A. in International Relations from the University of San Diego and her law degree from McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific. She has been an active member of SHRM of Greater Phoenix since January 2011.  She has served in a variety of capacities including President and incoming President for 2020. Lorie is currently licensed to practice law in Arizona, California, and Texas. 

 

Scott D. Ferrin, SHRM-SCP, CAE, PMP, has been the director for talent management at Arizona State University Enterprise Partners since 2019.

 

He has more than 25 years of work experience in HR in the association, mining, financial services, and insurance industries. He is an expert consultant and speaker on HR best practices. Before joining the ASUEP staff, he held titles such as field services director, senior workforce planner, workforce planning manager, HR manager, talent manager, recruiter and HR generalist for companies ranging in size from Fortune 500 to start-up companies with 20 employees. 

 

ASU Enterprise Partners (ASUEP) is a shared service enterprise of investment, finance, law, information systems, human resources and communication experts who provide centralized guidance and support to each entity that makes up ASU Enterprise Partners: the ASU Foundation, University Realty LLC, ASU Research Enterprises, Arizona Technology Enterprises and Research Collaboratory at ASU. These organizations support the aspiration of Arizona State University to be a New American University.

 

Michelle Gray is a Managing Partner and Client Consultant focusing on her professional experience in the Human Resources field. Michelle’s dedication in Human Resources stems over nearly two decades.  Her passion goes beyond the basic fundamentals of the field including continuing education and community outreach.  Her direct involvement, partnering with executive management and owners have demonstrated organizational growth and leadership engagement.  She has supported organizations ranging from small private businesses to large public corporations.

 

Michelle’s extensive knowledge includes strategic vision, leadership and management coaching, talent acquisition and management, compensation, total rewards, compliance, performance management, training and development, risk management, employee relations, conflict resolution, payroll management, diversity and inclusion, and benefit management.

 

Michelle’s involvement in the community, coupled with her experience, has provided her opportunities to speak at various association events as well as training engagements for various businesses and industries.  She is an active member of the Society for Human Resources Management and has held positions in the local Arizona SHRM associations to include; President, SMA of Greater Phoenix, Diversity & Inclusion Director of SHRM of Greater Phoenix and AZSHRM State Council; Director-Elect, District Director, State Conference Director, Diversity Director, Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA); Awards Committee Member and Board Member.  She is honored and proud to be the recipient of the 2014 Judith Krebs Memorial Volunteer Award.

 

Michelle currently holds a Professional Human Resources Certification (PHR), SHRM-CP, and Certified PDP Administrator, as well as a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management.  Her continuing education and desire to apply what she learns has demonstrated value among her clients and board members.

 

Jolanta Lewinska is a Manager of Training and Development at Caliper, supporting Caliper’s approach to learning through instructional design and facilitation of education events, workshops, and webinars. Her in-depth understanding of best practices in the areas of employee selection and development, coupled with her expert knowledge of the Caliper Profile, enables her to ensure the effective utilization of the assessment within the client organizations she serves. Her experience includes consulting with clients in a variety of industries, including healthcare, financial services, pharmaceutical, insurance, and technical services.

 

Jolanta earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biology from St. John’s University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Monmouth University. She is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Association for Talent Development (ATD), and Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society for business professionals. She also holds a SHRM-Certified Professional certificate (SHRM-CP) and an ATD Master Instructional Designer certification.
